When a fire runner lights his torch a huge blaze of tiny stars burst all around the streets. The Correfocs (fire runners) represent the devil force. Locals dress up as demons go running and scaring the spectators during the neighbourhood street parties.
The origin of the fire runners goes back to the Middle Ages. The dance of demons ( ball de diables) was used to entertain the nobility during regional celebrations, and were so popular that later became the central figures. Barcelona street parties often end up with the Correfocs alongside mythological creatures, spiting fire at the rhythm of the drums. Las Fiestas de Gracia and La fiestas de La Merced are very well known for their Correfocs. There are also other cities such as Valencia that have fire runners in their festivities.
