Art on the skin

Tattoo is Art on the skin. People’s bodies are like a blank canvas for the tattoo artist.

Names, faces, animals, flowers or a combination of all of that tell a story. Things and places that inspire us can be imprinted with ink forever. Tattoos are very special, finally something in your body that isn’t going to change over time.

Art on the skin is more real than other types of art. This has to do with the fact that is made on the skin. And is going to stay there for the rest of your life.

You could base your design on an existent one or you could start from scratch and make your own. Still those inky drawings will say more about the person who wears them than the artist who made it.

Personally, I don’t have one, because I change my mind all the time. And it’s not a folder you can magically delete.

Here at 13 Tattoo shop on Brighton Rd, Paul, Luke and Nina know all about it. They’re trusted to make something memorable, so expectation runs high when they pick the colours.

I had the chance to talk with Paul, who started when he was 16 years old. He made his first tattoo in his home kitchen. DIY style, needle and design made by him and of course it was his own skin the very first canvas.

What keeps you going?

I’m freaking love this job. I love working with people, they come and tell their stories. You meet different people, hear about their lives it’s fun.

When the shop first opened?

The shop opened 6 years ago. When we first opened there were 2 tattoo parlours in town, now there are 13.  Competition is good though, pushes you to make the best work.

What about the style?

No all the pictures can go on the skin. We always work on the style and discuss the work in advance. Although we have people who come and want to have a tattoo in half an hour.

Monochrome or colour?

Monochrome, because colour takes longer and I want to see the design finished.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

No with another shop, we’re so busy here!

As soon as I entered the shop I felt like I knew these guys for ages. The welcoming vibes are all around. Besides, you can see they love what they’re doing. If you want a picture that is going to stay forever on your skin, you want it done by someone who loves his job.

These guys are so passionate, I give them my body any time.

The fancy costumes and face painting was for Halloween.
