Photography is the best way to illustrate ideas, all content makers use photo aids to make their writing more appealing.

HubSpot tells “content with at least one image is 40 times more likely to be shared”. Yet, no everyone knows how to use their photos.

There are tons of tips out there, but how to edit your pics in order to make your content more appealing? Unedited images can take ages to upload and quite often pics get lost in a sea of data.

I made all the mistakes you can think of.  For this reason, I pulled this list, so you don’t have to go through the same pain.

5 Photo Tips

1#Resize

Size matters, your content has to upload fast right? Optimising the pictures for website is your number one priority. The ideal size is about 800x 600 px compression 72dpi.

Now for some people 1024 x 800 px is just fine. It all depends on the kind of site you have, but remember bigger images take more bandwidth.

If you have WordPress you can also adjust the size on the image library. But I’d recommend to edit the pictures before uploading into the system.

The good news is you don’t need Photoshop, there are plenty of  free tools that can help you. Here few of them,

Gimp

2#Colour

Readers engage more with colour images. Colours activate something in the brain that makes us take action, plus they’re more attractive.

However, a black and white pic can work well in some contexts. Personally, I use colour photography because I think life is in colour.

Also you can play with filters. Depends on the mood you want to bring, filters can have an emotional effect on your audience.

The online magazine Bustle tells “pictures with warm filters have more likes in social media”. So, play with filters and compare the results.

3#Text

Images are  already atractive, but images + typography activate curiosity even more! Overlying typography build up curiosity, giving the reader an idea of what the article is about.

A well designed banner invites the reader to dive into the article.

Nowadays, you can create a banner in matter of minutes with tools like Canva. You can customise  fonts, styles, sizes and the banner format.

4#crop

Crop unnecessary details,  with this simple method you draw the attention to the subject. No one needs to see a fire exit banner! Crop unnecessary details when possible.

You can do it right away in Windows Media Center. If you’re a Apple user Image Well is a fine tool. Also Canva.

When you crop an image, make sure the compression size stays the same as you don’t want to reduce the quality of the photograph. However,  as the pics are only for web usage you don’t need to worry too much.

5#Alt text

alt=”couple walking on a field”

In WordPress you can add alt text when you download the pics in the media library.

The alt tag describes what is on the pic. This is for visually impaired. Also, if for any reason your pics can’t upload the alt text describes what is suppose to be in the blank space.

The alt text should have at least one keyword for better SEO. Search engines  recognise the pic  linked to the text.
