Transparency

transparency

Hey guys today I want to talk about the running of this blog. It could be a good resource of information if you’re thinking on starting a blog. If you don’t sorry I need to share my experience.

Keeping things transparent gives me a sense of perspective. You’re more than welcome to participate in this site with suggestions, I’m keen to listen.

First I need to tell you how things started: the beginning of my journey

I started this blog in 2013, it had pictures and few lines. The blog was supported in Blogspot.  Here, I’d post pics of  the places I’ve visited. The format was nice and simple.

At the beginning of 2016 I bought the domain slitsight, migrated the blog into WordPress. And I started to write about other topics such as restaurants, food and culture. Topics were too broad,  I was  still experimenting!

This year 2017 I’m learning a lot about WordPress and all things digital. Because of that, I thought it’d be a good idea to write on tech and culture. Last March I decided to focus on that, I left the opinion category  as well and deleted the rest.

In addition, I started to make a content calendar, to organise topics around. At the beginning I’d post once a month. Hey It was a hobby! These days I post twice a week.

Bringing the money: how to monetize a blog

Every week I put my efforts into research, I do SEO homework still learning, but I really want to make this site useful to you. Besides, I began to think on ways to monetize this blog, not an easy thing.

To be honest I don’t want to fill this site with tons of ads and affiliate links. The idea is to keep it simple.  I have three affiliate links in the whole blog, the rest are normal links.

Having said that, I’m pretty new to affiliate marketing.

I’ve signed with two affiliate programs  Share a Sale and  Amazon.  With most programs you earn a tiny commission when someone buys from your links. This can be a bit tricky since you need a  huge following in order to earn a commission.

Another thing is ads. Ads can be a pain. Again this works well with a big fan base. I’m not sure about this site. But hey it’s good to try! I filled two ads applications, not adsence, thanks Google.

I signed in Content. ad and Carbon. Content.ad has a WordPress plugin, Carbon works with invitations only.

The other way of making money is with sponsored posts, brands offer you money in exchange for a “feature” post. It can be cool way of making money, at difference of ads or affiliate marketing,  sponsored content is straightforward.

I need to work on this, I’ll start to cold e-mail brands I’ll update you later on.

To be honest, I feel I need to find ways to monetize this site, in order to spend more time doing research to give you super fresh information.

This is the situation. I hope you didn’t fall sleep. I really feel this is a site for all, newbies and not so newbies creatives. Specially women.

Working in digital can bring you challenges, but sharing challenges is a good way of learning.

Do you have a blog? How you keep things ?

I’d love to hear from you. Drop me a line in the comments section below.
