London Village Project

The pictures have been taken between the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. The area I have focused on is Upton Park, East London. The first time I walked around the area I was not sure where to focus, but when I began to take pictures inside the main market, named Queen’s market, I realised  that I have found the subject for my project. The market offers to the passers-by numerous articles, yet, the colourful fabrics and the hospitality of its workers make this place quite unique.
The hustle and bustle of the streets enters the market in a constant flow of people, sellers shouting the last bargains and, of course, youngsters running up and down the corridors. The market suggests movement, transformation and spontaneity. Hence, the pictures engage with this dynamic.
I chose to work in colour as it would be the best way to represent the atmosphere of the market. Besides, the idea of a village is embodied through the closeness and the familiarity of the market; a little place that with many others, contributes to enhance London’s vibrant personality.
